Frequently Asked Questions - Tattoo Removal

Q. What types of patients are treated?

A. We are able to treat patients of all ages and skin types. If a patient is below age 18, we will need a parent or legal guardian to accompany them to the treatment. Regarding skin types, our laser is safe on all skin types ranging from light Caucasian skin to dark Hispanic and African skin.

Q. How are tattoos removed?

A. Medical lasers use an intense beam of light to lighten or completely remove your tattoo. Different wavelengths of light treat different colors of ink. When the ink particles of your tattoo absorb the light from the laser, they are broken up into tiny fragments. These fragments are then absorbed through your body's natural cleansing mechanism. This cleansing process generally takes a few weeks. Larger ink particles may require multiple treatments. With 4 different lasers (Discovery Pico, RevLite SI, Trivantage 755, Quanta Q+C,), Doctor Ink Eraser treats all ink colors with a variety of wavelengths and alternate between Nanosecond and Picosecond emission modes to get the fastest, most impressive results possible!

Q. How much will laser tattoo removal cost me?

A. The average price for laser tattoo removal in Georgia is around $135.00 for one square inch of ink, per treatment. At our clinics we have a minimum price of $75.00 a treatment and we always offer free consultations to all new clients. We also have special discounts for clients that have large tattoos that would normally be too expensive for most people to remove. Tattoo removal pricing is evaluated by the size, age and color of the tattoo. During the consultation process we will do our best to find a price that will benefit both parties.

Q. Do you offer any discounts?

A. Yes, we run monthly deals on our Tattoo Removal Specials page and on Facebook.

Q. How painful is it?

A. Tattoo removal will hurt more than getting the ink put on, but the actual treatment time for most tattoos is seconds! For example, a tattoo the size of a dollar can be fully treated in about 10-15 seconds. Once the treatment is finished the pain should subside in about 2 minutes. We use a topical anesthetic and a "zimmer chiller" to cool the skin during the procedure for our patient's comfort. We also have a topical numbing cream available that drastically diminishes the discomfort of the procedure.

Q. How many treatments will it take?

A. Most tattoos can take between 5-15 treatments. The amount of treatments will depend on the age of your tattoo, the types of ink that was used, and how your body responds to the treatments. After the tattoo is evaluated during the Free Consultation process, your laser technician will be able to give you a more accurate account of how many treatments you will need.

Most tattoos take between 5-10 treatments to remove. With our 4 different lasers, (Discovery Pico, RevLite SI, Trivantage 755, and Quanta Q+C,) we are able to remove tattoos in about 1/2 the time and treatments when compared with traditional removal methods.

Q. What if it doesn't work?

A. Since every tattoo and client is different, it is impossible to guarantee that any tattoo can be removed completely. Our clinics and laser specialist will do everything in our power to reduce as much ink as possible in the safest way possible. It is impossible to guarantee that with close inspection, the skin will look like nothing was ever there; however, the vast majority of tattoos get very, very close. If you are ever unhappy, with your results please let us know. We are always willing to help you out with pricing for difficult tattoos.

Q. What will my skin look like after treatment?

A. Your skin may have a white discoloration, and the area around the tattoo may be reddish and could have some swelling or minor blistering. While blisters and scabbing are normal parts of the healing process, the skin should return to normal tone and texture with time. We provide our patients detailed after-care instructions to help them manage their skin after the treatment.

Q. Will the laser procedure scar my skin?

A. No. This is a question that many new patients ask about, and we understand their concerns. With our modern lasers, (Discovery Pico, TriVantage 755, RevLite SI, Quanta Q+C,) the chance of scar tissue development is extremely minimal if the tattoo is taken care of correctly after laser treatment. Our lasers don't go deep enough into the tissue to create a scarring response and are in and out of the skin so fast, the surrounding tissue isn't damaged. With older, outdated lasers, the chance of scar tissue is greatly increased, but we know how to handle all skin types and have the best possible equipment to do so.

There is no need to be concerned about scarring unless you have a history of keloid scarring, which our provider will discuss with you.

Q. Are there any side effects?

A. Occasionally, lightening and/or darkening of areas of skin, (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation,) may occur. Usually this is a transient issue that resolves itself within 6-12 months. Also, similar to when you get the tattoo, the area must be cared for correctly to prevent infection.
